Deep dive: Linguaskill Business and the ALTE Q-mark
Quality assessed beyond the score. What the ALTE Q-mark means for Linguaskill Business.
What the ALTE Q-mark means for Linguaskill Business
A language certificate only carries value when you can rely on how the result was produced. For business schools and employers, the quality of the exam itself therefore matters too: from the development of test tasks to delivery, assessment and reporting.
Linguaskill Business carries the ALTE Q-mark. This quality mark is awarded to exams that have successfully completed a rigorous ALTE audit. Cambridge announced the award for Linguaskill on 13 January 2026. The official ALTE register lists Linguaskill Business as a business language test for B1 up to and including C2.
Assessed against 18 quality standards.
ALTE stands for the Association of Language Testers in Europe. The Q-mark confirms that the audited exam meets the core requirements of the 18 quality standards. The audit also takes into account the purpose for which the exam was developed.
The standards cover five areas: test development, administration and logistics, assessment and scoring, test analysis, and communication with candidates and other users. The quality assessment therefore covers the entire testing process.
Reliability and consistency as a starting point.
According to the official Cambridge publication, ALTE established that Linguaskill is professionally and systematically organised, with attention to validity and reliability throughout the entire exam cycle.
The published findings also mention the measurement of English language proficiency, consistent results and quality assurance. In addition, the use of technology in test development and delivery was positively assessed.
Relevant to decisions that matter.
A language result can weigh into admissions, programme completion, recruitment or professional development. In such situations, the Q-mark provides additional assurance about the processes and standards behind the exam.
For business schools, this matches the need for a carefully reviewed language certificate. For employers, it offers a quality argument when choosing a test for business English communication. The business-specific content and the quality assurance complement each other in this way.
A mark with a clear scope.
The ALTE Q-mark is awarded to the audited exam or exam series, not to the organisation as a whole. Linguaskill Business is explicitly listed in the ALTE register. The mark belongs to the exam; it is not a separate certification for talkingENGLISH.
The validity of an audit outcome is limited in time and can change when significant changes are made to the exam. The register lists a validity for Linguaskill Business until 25 September 2030.
Two different forms of evidence.
The ALTE audit and the Dutch Hobéon audit are separate assessments. The Q-mark underpins the quality of the exam according to ALTE’s standards. Inclusion in the Dutch language table determines the options for use within the Dutch Code of Conduct for International Students in Higher Education, under the conditions that apply there.
